Specialty Coffee from Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Tanzania’s AA coffee is produced in farms set in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Northern Tanzania. Here coffee trees have the benefit from the glacial runoff from the snow-peaked mountain and moderately cooler temperatures compared to other coffee regional coffee producers. The soil is both volcanic and fertile, bringing rich flavour into the cherry harvest. Coffee today generates approximately 5% of the country’s export revenue and employs directly and indirectly 6% of the population of the country’s population. A majority of Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro coffee is produced by smallholder farmers with an estimated 450,000 farmers in the country, producing 90% of the annual output. Our coffee is sourced from our partners, the Kilimanjaro Native Cooperative Union. Founded in 1984, they have been on a mission to better the farmers’ livelihoods and to create a high-quality crop that is world-renowned for its flavour, body and slight acidity. Growing most of the coffee on the foothills of the majestic Mt Kilimanjaro, the coffee develops a distinct taste from its volcanic soils. The KNCU has set a FairTrade premium to help build the livelihoods of its farmers. In addition to an educational fund that provides scholarships, they finance the farming of organic coffee and establish a nursery to supply farmers with new seedlings when needed.
